AKFC’s International Development Fellowship Program

Since 1989, Aga Khan Foundation Canada (AKFC) has been helping to develop young Canadian leaders in the field of international development through its International Development Fellowship Program. The program is designed to develop leadership and management skills and promote learning for outstanding young Canadians who have a desire and aptitude to work effectively in a global environment.

All Fellowships feature an eight-month placement in Asia or Africa, preceded by a four-week management seminar in Ottawa facilitated by leading development practitioners.

AKFC is now accepting applications for its Fellowship program in each of the three streams below.

INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT MANAGEMENT (IDM) FELLOWSHIP

The International Development Management (IDM) program builds on twenty years of success in which more than 250 university graduates have received focused study and practical experience that has enabled them to pursue leadership positions in their chosen fields. The program, designed as a stepping stone for careers in international development, has proven attractive to young Canadians from a wide variety of disciplines—including law, engineering, journalism, education, business and public administration, and development studies—wishing to embark on global careers.

Up to fifteen IDM Fellowships will be awarded for the 2010/2011 Program.

INTERNATIONAL MICROFINANCE AND MICROENTERPRISE (IMM) FELLOWSHIP

The International Microfinance and Microenterprise (IMM) program places young Canadians with an organization involved in microfinance or microenterprise and provides opportunities to gain skills in the day-to-day operations and evaluation of these programs. Currently in its seventh year, builds upon the highly successful Fellowship in International Development Management (IDM) that AKFC has developed for young Canadians committed to sustainable human development.

Upon return to Canada, participants are expected to contribute significantly to the quality of support that Canadian organizations and institutions are able to provide their partners in Canada and the developing world. Up to ten IMM Fellowships will be awarded for the 2010/2011 Program.

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS IN MEDIA (YPM) FELLOWSHIP

The Young Professionals Program in Media (YPM) is designed to develop leadership and management skills and promote learning for outstanding young Canadian journalists who have a desire and an aptitude to work effectively in today’s global media environment. Successful candidates will undertake an eight month placement with Nation Media Group, a leading media institution in East Africa, which includes The Nation newspaper in Nairobi, the Monitor in Kampala, the East African in Dar es Salaam and several broadcast holdings. This fifth cycle of the YPM program builds on AKFC’s twenty years of success in managing overseas internship programs. The YPM program, designed as a stepping stone for careers in international media, targets young Canadian journalists —including students of print, broadcast, documentary, and internet journalism—wishing to embark on global careers.

While in East Africa, participants will be exposed to elements of print media report and editorial writing, broadcast news gathering and production, and general media operations management. Specific placement terms of reference will be tailored to the skills, experience, and interest of participants. Two Fellowships will be awarded for the 2010/2011 Program.

THE MANAGEMENT SEMINAR

A month-long management seminar in Ottawa provides fellows with a thorough grounding in the skills required to contribute effectively to their host organizations by emphasizing an analytical approach and strategic thinking and planning. Workshops are taught by some of Canada’s foremost international cooperation professionals.

Participants then carry out an eight-month internship where they gain first-hand, practical experience, while contributing to their host organization’s work.
